Logitech Alto Keys K98M: lots of technology for keyboard fans

With the new Logitech Alto Keys K98M mechanical keyboard, the manufacturer is bringing features to the mid-price segment that were previously reserved for enthusiast boards. Interchangeable switches, an almost fully-fledged layout, wireless multi-device connectivity and an eye-catching design make this model particularly interesting for technology enthusiasts.

Highlights

  • Compact 98-key layout (with numeric keypad) in an almost full-size format.
  • Hot-swappable (replaceable) Cherry-MX compatible switches + UniCushion rubber cushioning for improved typing feel.
  • Wireless connection via Bluetooth and Logi Bolt as well as USB-C, with multi-device switching (up to 3 devices).
  • Battery for up to 12 months of use (without illumination) and white backlighting thanks to PBT keycaps with translucent lettering.

Design and layout

The Alto Keys K98M has an almost fully-fledged layout with numeric keypad, function keys and normal arrow keys – ideal for users who both type and make typical gaming inputs. Logitech uses a special stylistic feature for the housing: the upper half of the housing is transparent, while the lower half matches the color of the selectable keycaps – available in white, blue or black, among others.

The keycaps are made of PBT material with a translucent function for the white LED lighting: this ensures both high quality and good legibility in dark rooms. For gamers and frequent typists: The layout and solid workmanship make the keyboard suitable for universal use – for office/development as well as gaming.

Interchangeable switches & suspension

One of the key selling points: The K98M allows the linear “Marble” switches to be swapped out, and Logitech states that all Cherry MX-compatible switches fit into the sockets. In addition, a so-called UniCushion Gasket assembly is used – a rubber cushioning in the housing.

This is intended to minimize vibrations and make the typing experience softer and more comfortable. For users, this means that those who prefer a key mechanism (e.g. linear, tactile or clicky) can switch later – and thus gain a certain longevity and adaptability.

Connectivity & multi-device

The keyboard offers both Bluetooth and the Logi Bolt receiver with USB-C connection – meaning: PC, Mac, iPad, smartphone – everything can be used. Switching between up to three devices is possible at the touch of a button. This makes the K98M interesting for IT professionals who want to switch between a work PC, laptop and tablet, for example, or gamers with a setup mix of console and PC.

The white backlighting combined with PBT keycaps offers a discreet, stylish implementation instead of RGB blending. According to the manufacturer, up to 12 months of battery life is possible – but only when the backlight is deactivated. For many users, however, this should represent a very good service life in practice – especially if the backlight is only activated occasionally.

Price and availability

The Alto Keys K98M is currently on sale in the USA at a price of around 119.99 US dollars – no specific date has yet been given for availability in Germany. If you are not a fan of mechanical keyboards, you should take a look at the Logitech MX Keys S (€ 82.10 *) instead.
